Deja vu is a funny thing. Sometimes it happens and you know it right off. Other times it sort of slips up on you in little pieces. You can't quit put your finger on it. Then all of a sudden you realize that you've been, seen, or heard this thing you're experiencing before.

That's the story behind Garage Doors. Cheryl was raised in Groton, MA. The home she lived in had a big garage. On that garage was a pair of huge black doors. Those doors did big things. Really big things. They gave the neighborhood a place to gather during the big events held in the park across the street. They gave the boys in the neighborhood a place to do really big experiments behind them when they were closed. There were bikes, wagons, rockets, tools and fishing poles. In the garage in Groton.

When Cheryl visited her brother in Maine, she noticed the doors on the garage. They were thick heavy wood, and had a lot of layers of paint on them. The bottom layer was black. She didn't mention it to her brother at first. There was no way they could be the same doors. There was over 40 years and 600 miles between where she last saw them, and where they were now. It simply wasn't possible. She didn't mention it to her brother. On that trip.

The next time Cheryl visited Maine, the doors had been painted again. But the black paint was still showing in some areas. And this time she noticed a few other things. Like nicks in the door where someone had run into it. The same as what had happened to the other doors, by someone she knew. So she decided to ask her brother about them.

When the house in Groton was sold, the doors were taken off the garage. They were stored at her sister in law's father's house. Until it was decided that they needed a better home. About that same time up in Maine, it was time to replace the doors on the garage. So a deal was struck, the doors were moved again, and Cheryl was right. It was deja vu all over again.

The doors and the memories they contained inspired this painting.
